Wine Storage Tips

If a wine is to be stored for a few weeks or more, proper storage conditions are essential.

Cool temperatures slow the aging process of the wine, which increases complexity and depth. High temperatures will speed the aging process, preventing the wine from developing complexity. A constant temperature is also essential. Fluctuations in temperature can cause wine to expand and contract, may loosen the cork and expose the wine to oxygen.. Wine should be stored at a constant temperature, between 50-60 degrees F.

Store wine in a dark place, so that it will retain it's clarity. Light reacts with proteins in the wine, forming a haze, as well as undesirable flavors and aromas.

Wine should be stored on it's side, which keeps the cork moist and tight. If the cork dries out, it may loosen, subjecting the wine to oxidation and vinegaring.

Basements are usually ideal places to store wine, because of the cool, constant temperature, and darkness. If a basement is unavailable, a little used closet in an air-conditioned part of the home is suitable. If neither one is available, you can purchase wine storage units, which offer temperature and humidity control.
