Columbia Valley

With an area of about 18,000 square miles, the Columbia Valley appellation is the largest in Washington, covering about one third of the state. The Columbia Valley is located in central and eastern Washington State, stretching from the Cascade Mountains in the west, to the Idaho Border on the East.

The Columbia region is the warmest and sunniest wine region in the Northwest, with hot, dry summers, and two hours more sunlight in the summer than the Napa Valley in California. The Cascade Mountains, to the west provide a rain shadow effect, so the amount of water that the grapes receive can be precisely controlled through irrigation from the Columbia River, the Yakima River, and the Snake River.

The climate allows Cabernet and Chardonnay grapes to fully ripen most years. Other grape varieties also thrive in the Columbia Valley climate, including Sauvignon, Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and more. Several award winning merlots and cabernets have been produced in the Columbia Valley region. More than 90% of the state's wine grapes are grown in the Columbia Valley.

The Columbia Valley also includes the wine producing regions of Yakima Valley, Walla Walla Valley, and Red Mountain.
