Spain

Spain has a long history of winemaking, as old and established as that of France. Spain also has possibly more vineyards than any other country in the world.

The most important feature of the Spanish climate, is the relentless sunshine. This raises the sugar levels of the wine grapes, which raises the alcohol level of the finished wines. It also concentrates the flavors wonderfully.

The leading Spanish wine region is Rioja. This region produces mostly red wines, primarily from Tempranillo grapes. This region is in the north of Spain. When the phylloxera epidemic struck France, many wine makers moved to northern Spain to continue their trade. They taught the Spaniards how to make wine from their local grapes, resulting in a series of strong, flavorful red wines.
