South
Africa
South Africa has been producing
fine wine since the 17th century. However, there has been little interest
in its industry until recently. Because of politics and economics, South
African wines are only now developing a following outside it's borders.
Due to the influence of cold
water currents, the climate of South Africa is considerably cooler than
one might expect. These cold currents bring cool breezes, which create
a typical Mediterranean Climate, with warm summer days, and cool wet
winters.
South Africa's white wines
have a very good international reputation. Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay
grapes thrive in South Africa. A number of high quality red wines are
also produced, including Pinotage, which is a cross between Pinot Noir
and Cinsault. South Africa also produces a light, fruity Shiraz.
