New
Zealand
The trend of fine wines coming
out of New Zealand is similar in many ways to the developments in California.
Areas that would otherwise be too warm to grow wine grapes are cooled
by ocean breezes. Many of the wineries are only recently discovering
which grapes are most successful in which regions.
Most of New Zealand's wines
come from white grapes. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the most
planted grape varieties. For red wines, the biggest producer is Pinot
Noir, which is projected to earn the same attention for New Zealand
as Shiraz did for Australia.
