Germany
While Germany is known more
for beer, wine has been cultivated here since Roman times.
The most famous wine growing
region in Germany is the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region, with vineyards along
the steep banks of the Mosel and it's tributaries. The Rheingau is another
important region, located along the Rhein.
Approximately 80% of the
wines produced in Germany are white, but the differences in climate
and style make up a wide array. The finest of these is Riesling, which
being sensitive to soil and climate characteristics, many wine connoisseurs
feel is one of the world's greatest white wines. Some very good German
wines are also made from Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Müller-Thurgau,
and several other grapes.
