Southern Italy

Wine is produced in many regions in the southern half of Italy, from Abruzzi to Sicily, with a wide variety of wine being produced.

Abruzzi is a major producer of wine, exceeding the volume of wine produced by Austria, Chile, Hungary, or Greece. A growing number of wines, produced in the hills between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines prove the quality potential of this region.

Apulia, the region forming the "heel" of the boot, vies with Sicily as the largest wine producer in Italy. Formerly known as a source of blending wines, Apulia has increasingly put the accent on premium quality wines.

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, and the largest region of Italy, as well as the nation's largest producer of wine. Previously known for Marsala, Sicily is now known for modern premium quality wines, red, white, and rose.

Medium red. Smoky aromas of redcurrant, tar and meat, with a liqueur-like quality. Smooth, sweet and expressive if a bit chunky and lacking in definition. Flavors lifted by a floral nuance. Finishes with slightly dry tannins and good but not outstanding length.
