California
Wine Country
When most people think of
American winemaking, they think of California, and rightly so. California
produces 80% to 85% of the wine in America. The topography and soils
of northern California along with a climate, moderated by the cool Pacific
Ocean, provide conditions suitable for growing a wide variety of grapes.
The most well known wine
growing regions in California are the Napa
Valley, and the Sonoma
Valley, north of San Francisco. Other wine regions in California
include Carneros,
the Central
Coast, the North
Coast, and the Sierra
Foothills.
