About Ice Wine

There are many different types of wine that are available for you to buy today that are relatively known; from red and white to fortified and sparkling as well as others. However, have you ever heard of ice wine? Ice wine is a rare form of wine that is one the most unheard of and is produced under certain types of weather conditions. It is produced in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States where the weather conditions are appropriate for the wine.

The rarity of ice wine is due to the small qualities of production due to it's lack of availability and requirement of only the finest of grapes. To purchase such a wine if to be very fortunate because very few people are able to do so. Ice wine, due to its scarcity, is very expensive and out of most people's price range.

Much like a rare and expansive gem, ice wine is something that a lot of people hope to experience and taste sometime in their lives. Even though the materials for making such a wine are rare, the factor that is even more crucial in producing the beverage is the weather. The wine maker starts producing the wine once the right weather conditions arrive.

The requirements that are needed to produce ice wine is a temperature around 17 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 degrees Celsius) and grapes that are fully ripened. In order to complete the ice wine making process, the temperature needs to stay in the required temperature range for several days. During these cold temperatures the grapes are frozen and hand picked by the winemaker and his or her assistants. Full vine grapes may be required to produce a bottle of the wine.

Once collected, the grapes are then gently pressed to only collect the running juice. Frozen water crystals are created by the temperatures and are fermented along with the particles and sugars that are found in the running juices and the ice wine is created.

Finding ice wine to try is very difficult and most alcohol and wine stores do not sell it. Unless you find it at the right time, finding it online is just as difficult.

However the best way to experience this unique beverage is to find a wine maker who produces ice wine in the Pacific Northwest. You may be able to catch a winemaker who has it on hand even though bottles of it go very fast once they are made. Even though it is more expensive than the other wines and very rare to find, you may find ice wine to be worth the price and effort.
